How to Use Facebook Text Messages
If you want to update your Facebook status on the go but don't have a fancy BlackBerry, Android or iPhone, you're not out of luck. You can use Facebook text messaging to get the same results. You just need to go into your account settings and make a few tweaks.

STEP ONE
Log into your Facebook account on your computer to activate Facebook Mobile. Click the "Account" menu in the upper-right corner of the page and select "Account Settings" from the drop-down menu. Click the "Mobile" tab in the left column. Click "Add a Phone." You'll be prompted to enter your Facebook password before proceeding.

STEP TWO
Select your country and your mobile carrier from the drop-down menus. Add your phone number where indicated. Facebook sends a text message to your phone with an activation code. Enter the code in the box provided to complete the signup process.

STEP THREE
Check the box next to "Activate Facebook Text Messages" and click "Submit." Update your status from your cellphone by texting your update to 32665 (FBOOK). The status update appears on your profile exactly as you type it on the phone.

STEP FOUR
Return to "Account Settings." Select "Notifications" from the left side of the page. Select "Facebook" next to "All Notifications" to expand the menu. Place a check mark under the "Text notifications" icon (a mobile phone) for each category of message or contact you want forwarded to your cellphone. Click "Save Changes" when finished. Repeat with any of the other categories that you wish to have forwarded to your phone.

To prevent a friend or group of friends from calling or chatting with you:

Create a friend list that includes the people you’d like to prevent from chatting with you. You can also use any existing friend list you’ve created.
Step 01: Click the wheel icon located in the bottom right corner of the messaging sidebar.
Step 02: Select Limit Availability...
Step 03: Check the box next to the friend list you don’t want to be available to chat with and click Close.
You can also select “Only make me available to:” from the menu and check off the friend lists you want to be able to chat with.

Note: To stop someone from contacting you, you can also unfriend the person or block the person from interacting with you in any way on Facebook.

Facebook to pass Yahoo in Display Ads Revenue

Facebook is on track to pass Yahoo! in US display advertising revenue this year, according to a forecast published on Monday by digital marketing firm eMarketer.

According to data published by eMarketer, Facebook’s share of U.S. display-advertising revenue is expected to reach 17.7% this year compared with 12.2% last year, while Yahoo’s share is seen dipping to 13.1% this year from 14.4% last year.

Meanwhile Google Inc., which long ago surpassed Yahoo in the search-advertising market, is expected to pull even with Yahoo in U.S. display ads by next year, eMarketer said.

The firm says that Google's display ad revenue will climb 58.3 percent, while Facebook will grow a more modest 31.3 percent. eMarketer, though, cautions that the Facebook estimate for 2012 "is likely on the conservative side" and may be adjusted upward when the firm revises its social network ad revenue estimates in August.

Microsoft, which purchased a stake in Facebook in 2007, is expected to see its share of the U.S. display-advertising market dip to 4.9% this year from 5.1% last year, according to eMarketer.

Huawei Releases Teaser Video of the MediaPad

Huawei has posted a teaser video for its forthcoming MediaPad tablet. In the 44-second teaser video, a woman is using the silver 7in touchpad device, eventually showing it off to small group of onlookers.

Little else was unveiled and no additional hardware specifications or features were given. Previous images posted by the company showed the MediaPad offered a slim design with generally generic looks.

According to a Huawei Facebook page, the company will release additional details about the MediaPad on 20 June.

The i3D uses a new technology known as Head-Coupled Perspective (HCP). Developed by Engineering Human-Computer Interaction (EHCI) Research Group, HCP uses a front facing camera to track the movements of a user's head, allowing the app to adjust the display accordingly. The result is a monocular 3D screen that creates the illusion of looking into a box.

One of the researchers of the i3D app says -
“We track the head of the user with the front facing camera in order to create a glasses-free monocular 3D display. Such spatially-aware mobile display enables to improve the possibilities of interaction. It does not use the accelerometers and relies only on the front camera.”

The technology works fairly well, but it definitely prefers decent lighting so it can see where your face is.

Apple, Google Under Deeper Investigation over Location Tracking

A U.S. Senate subcommittee plans to hold a hearing on May 10 to investigate revelations disclosed last week that Apple's iPhone and iPad devices and Google's Android smartphones track users' locations.

Senator Al Franken, chairman of the new subcommittee, has asked representatives from Apple and Google Inc to testify at the hearing.

"This hearing is the first step in making certain that federal laws protecting consumers' privacy – particularly when it comes to mobile devices – keep pace with advances in technology," Franken said in a statement Monday.

Apple hasn't yet publicly commented on the issue, while Google says it will work with lawmakers.

Microsoft has confirmed that its new browser, Internet Explorer 10, will not run on Windows Vista, either now in its developer preview form or when the software ships.

In the release note, Microsoft said that users need to run the IE10 Platform Preview on Windows 7 RTW -- the designation for the original 2009 release of the OS or Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1). The latter started reaching users on Feb. 22.

When Vista users try to install the IE10 preview, they see a dialog box that reads, "Windows Internet Explorer Platform Preview does not support any operating system earlier than Windows 7," after which the installation process terminates.

Windows XP users see the same message when they attempt to install IE10.

Google have lodged a $900 million bid for the patent portfolio of Nortel Networks, the bankrupt telecommunications company. The portfolio includes patents and patent applications for wired, wireless and digital communications technology.

The patents could vital to Google who fear potential lawsuits will be filed against its Chrome browser and Android software. With Google desperate to get the hands on the patent portfolio and other companies such Apple, Nokia, HTC and Huawei all equally as keen, experts believe the final price could rocket to anything between $1 billion and $2 billion.

Apple has released the final version of Mac OS X 10.6.7.

Gabriel Dishaw, 30 years old living in Indianapolis Indiana, has created a pair of sneakers constructed from discarded computer parts and junk. In United States around 100,000 pounds of electronic waste are discarded daily, some of which are recycled.

Some of the wastes that happen to reach Mr.Dishaw hands are being sculptured to high end junk sculptures since the mid 1990's. All his creations are constructed from essentially nothing more than useless old junk. He completely disassembles found objects like typewriters, adding machines and old computer parts and then reassembles them into a master artwork using simple metal wire.

Recently he has sculptured a pair of sneakers like Nike, Air Max 2011. Dishaw has used copper from heat sinks, clear tubing around the mid sole from a 747 plane its actually from the oxygen mask that drops from the ceiling, The words on the back of the shoe are from typewriter keys and the shoe box is an old typewriter case. He has spend 90 hours to complete the master piece.

Adobe Systems has released Wallaby, a new experimental tool that converts simple Flash games and animations into HTML5.

The free, cross-platform desktop application from Adobe Labs, makes transforming Adobe Flash files, which Apple rejects from the App Store, into HTML5, so that it is readable on “devices that do not support the Flash runtimes”. It turns Flash Professional files into HTML5 code, which can then be edited using any text editor or authoring tool like Dreamweaver.

“Adobe’s goal is to support our customers with whatever tools they need to get their creative content onto any device,” said Tom Barclay, senior product manager for Flash Professional at Adobe, when asked for a comment. “We look forward to the user feedback about the code they’re generating with Wallaby and the use cases for which they end up using Wallaby. We believe Flash is the best long-term solution for things like games, video and RIAs where high levels of interactivity are required. And we believe HTML5 is just as imperative for things like banner ads, especially for devices such as iPad and iPhone.”

LG to Launch 3D TVs with Passive Glasses

LG will be unveiling their LW6500 range of 3D TVs with passive glasses in the year 2011. These passive glasses work along with the new film on LCD screens, making it a lot easier to accept 3D imagery. The end result is apparently improved by a large margin, as this technology produces a brighter, more flicker-free image that reduces the crosstalk from the two parts of the stereoscopic image. This obviously means less blurring, which in turn equals less chance of you getting a headache while watching 3D content.

No headaches and clearer 3d imaging aren’t the only good things that come with these new glasses, as passive technology also means that the glasses will be lighter and cheaper. LG also claims that the viewing angle will be greatly increased with these glasses, and that 3D viewing will be possible at almost any angle. Although LG hasn’t given out too many details about the LW6500 series, they have mentioned that they will be available in four sizes; 42, 47, 55 and 65-inch. The Logo was not just an image, When i had a closer look at the Logo I understood that it was an animation - a glow of radiation being released from each letter of GOOGLE. (here i have posted image, not animation)

on November 8, 1895, German physics professor Wilhelm Röntgen discovered X-rays while experimenting with Lenard and Crookes tubes and began studying them.
The X-Ray version of the Google Logo contains few Bones, But i really dont understand why there is a "Key" and a "duck". Can any one explain this please?

UFO sightings have increased in China, according to media reports. In a recent sighting, photography student Gu Peiwen closely examined a photo in his camera and shouted in disbelief: “I just caught aliens on camera!”

According to Shanxi News Net, it was near midnight on Sept. 22 as Gu and his friend were taking photos of the beautiful moonlight view of the ancient Pingyao City in north China’s Shanxi Province, when Gu noticed a bright spot in his photo. He first thought it was a star, but could not find a star in that position when he carefully looked back up into the sky. Enlarging the photo, Gu found the bright spot was a flat object with two flashlight-like beams behind it.

Excited, both students continued to take more photos, hoping to track the object, invisible to the naked eye. The photos showed that it had lingered for about 40 minutes

Last year, Japanese wireless carrier KDDI started selling the first commercially available 3-D cellphone, called the Hitachi Woo. More than 300,000 devices were sold in in just a few weeks. The Woo’s 3-D display, powered by masterImage, uses a parallax barrier, a layer that’s placed over an LCD screen to help produce the feeling of depth by directing slightly different images to each eye.

A layer of material with a number of small, precise slits is placed on top of a display. The slits direct light from each image slightly differently creating a “sweet spot” that can range from 12 inches to 20 inches in front of the screen. At the sweet spot, the brain sees two slightly offset images that it can use to create a composite with the perception of depth. MasterImage says the 3-D layer adds about $10 to $15 to the overall bill of materials for the phone.

“Only one person who’s holding the phone can see the 3-D effect,” says James Bower, president of MasterImage 3-D, a Burbank, California, company that makes 3-D displays. He said , “but we have created a good sweet spot so there’s no struggling to find the the right position.”

That doesn’t mean the results are perfect, but it’s good enough to experience 3-D without requiring cumbersome glasses or extremely sophisticated technology.

But the ease of use comes at a price. Adding a layer on top of the LCD or OLED screen reduces brightness by up to 50 percent and resolution by almost the same number.

“Technically you are losing resolution but psychologically you are gaining a lot more information,” he says.

Google TV to be Unveiled soon

We’ve been curious about the Google TV initiative since hearing about the search giant’s foray into set-top box land, and although scant few details have emerged since then we can now look forward to a full reveal at next month’s I/O Developer Conference.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Google (Google) will unveil the Android (Android)-based television platform at its annual developer event in San Francisco on May 19 and 20.

Hardware partners, including Sony, Intel and Logitech, have already announced plans to release products on the Google TV platform. Consumer electronics giant Samsung also recently confirmed that it’s considering the platform as well — an interesting move considering Samsung already has its own app store for Internet (Internet)-connected TVs.

Google has extended significant tendrils into the television space lately, both with the Google TV project and with a television search initiative with Dish Network. In some ways it’s a logical “third screen” move now that the internet company has established itself as a significant player in the mobile space.

No, they aren’t animated characters. They are human beings who were made to wear body suits. “The design of the characters is such that one gets fooled into thinking it is animation,” shrugs Mr. Rao, O&M the Ad agency who created the Zoozoo Ads for Vodafone. “In a sense, it is ‘live’ animation!” he said.
If you are thinking that they are Computer animated characters, If you think they are created using 3DS Max or Maya.... You have no other choice just pat the O&M team for creating an illusion that it is animated.

“It took me three weeks of pre-production to understand how it will work,” says Prakash Varma, ad filmmaker, Nirvana Films, who directed the commercials. There were two fabrics that were considered for the body suits, and one was rejected for it had too many wrinkles and was shiny. The wrinkles would have shown when the characters moved, thereby shattering the illusion of animation. “So we chose the more practical, thicker fabric,” Varma explains.

“We kept the hands and legs thin, which is why we cast women – and occasionally children – wearing the costumes,” says Varma. The thin limbs, contrasted with big bellies and a bulbous head, all add to the illusion that these creatures are ‘smaller’ than humans. Sets were created to suit the size of the Zoozoos. Cinematically, this ‘size’ was a trick: the creatures look smaller than they actually are on screen, to portray a different world of sorts. For this, the speed of shooting was altered: Nirvana shot it in a high-speed format to make them look the size that they do. Furthermore, simple sets/backdrops were created and spray painted with neutral Greys – a colour of choice so that attention isn’t diverted from the main characters. For a supposedly ‘outdoor’ shot, even the shadow of a Zoozoo was kept ‘live’ and not done in post production: it was painted in a darker shade of grey on the ground. An even lighting was maintained throughout.

Sharp has released 3-D Screens For Mobile Devices

For all the 3-D aficionados out there, there's both good and bad news. Japanese electronics giant Sharp Corp showed off its liquid crystal screens today for mobile devices. Its 3-D displays offer bright, clear images without the need for those annoying glasses generally required for such technology. And the bad news: They only work on a 7.5 cm (3") screen held 30 cm (12") from the user's face.

These LCD screens for mobile handsets showed 3-D animation, touch-panel screens that swivelled from one 3-D photo to another and a display wired to a 3-D video camera.

Movies and TVs in 3-D no longer raise eyebrows, with giants like Sony, Pansonic as well as Samsung and LG Electronics gearing up to sell 3-D TVs.

The hitch was the need for special glasses, which show different images to the right and left eyes. Sharp's 3-D technology has solved the problem as the displays are designed to show different images to each eye. Yoshisuke Hasegawa, executive managing officer, Sharp Corp, said the technology may be applied to TVs in the future, reports Yahoo! News. But he said it works more efficiently if the distance between the viewer and the screen is fixed.

Sharp has made this technology for mobile devices such as cell phones and digital cameras.

An open source game called 'Pong', developed by Imperial College London (ICL) students, where a player don't have to use their hands to control the game, instead the bat is moved to hit the ball as it bounces by the eye movement.

The user has to wear a special infra red glassess which has an inbuilt camera to record the eye movement. A computer is connected to this glasses to synchronize the players eye movement and thus you can control the movement of the bat in the game by just eye movement.

"The game that they've developed is quite simple, but we think it has enormous potential, particularly because it doesn't need lots of expensive equipment... We hope it could ultimately provide entertainment options for people who have very little movement," said Aldo Faisal, the team's supervisor from the Department of Bioengineering, ICL.

One of the major benefits of the new technology is that it is inexpensive, using off-the-shelf hardware and it will help the disabled in using the computer effectively.

"In future, people might be able to blink to turn pages in an electronic book, or switch on their favourite song, with the roll of an eye," he said, according to an Imperial release.

"Remarkably, our undergraduates have created this piece of neurotechnology using bits of kit that you can buy in a shop, such as webcams," Faisal said.

Panasonic Corp has announced that their 3D TVs in the United States will be released on March 10 which will be promoted by top U.S. electronics retailer 'Best Buy Co'

Sony will market their 3D TVs in Japan from June 10 and has plans to launch in the overseas market around the same time.

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, the world's No.1 TV brand said it would launch 3D TVs globally this month and expect to sell at least 2 million 3D TVs this year, Last month they have started their 3DTV sales in South Korea

The sci-fi blockbuster "Avatar" and other recent titles have sparked massive interest in 3D movies, and electronics makers are now rushing to get flat panel TVs with three-dimensional visual effects to the market.

"We set the June 10 launch date after taking software availability into consideration. Without content, 3D TVs cannot be of much use," Sony's Ishida said. "I don't think a few months means much."

Technology addicts offered treatment

Technology addicts can now seek treatment at a London hospital which has launched bespoke treatment for those diagnosed with the condition. The programme is designed for young people who spend large amounts of time each day playing computer games or using social network websites.

When deprived they become "chronically agitated and irritable" said the treatment's founder Dr Richard Graham. Dr Graham's treatment programme lasts 28 days if done intensely. "The preoccupation with accessing sites and responding to messages is so compelling that it gets prioritised... it can impact on other areas of life and skew young people's ability to engage in other activities."

Online gambling clinics have already sprung up across South East Asia, where excessive amounts of time spent in virtual worlds is causing real life problems.

A recent example is that of a South Korean couple who let their baby starve while they played role-playing game Prius Online for up to 12 hours at a time. The behaviour of such addicts can be "desperate and extreme" said Dr Graham.

Visitors to the hospital website can take a test to gauge their level of technology addiction, answering questions about their online habits and how these habits are perceived by others.

Facebook has more loyal news reader than Google News

Adding yet another feather to its cap, Facebook has triumphed over Google, as the social networking site has more loyal news readers.A new survey by the firm Hitwise has found that news readers find Facebook a better trusted and reliable source than Google News.

The firm collected the data for the week ending March 6, 2010, and analyzed the unique viewers to these sites and where they were directed from. Then it determined how many users visited multiple times from the same source. According to the data, 78 percent of Facebook’s loyal users revisited the site for more news as compared to only 67 percent of Google News users who came back.

Moreover, 77 percent Facebook users returned to broadcast news sites , versus only 64 percent Google News users who revisited.

"The launch of News Feed in 2006 was a pivotal moment in Facebook’s history and changed the way millions of people consumed and discovered information on the site," Facebook said.

"A few weeks ago when I posted my blog entry about Facebook being the largest news reader, I received a few comments and emails noting that visitors aren't as valuable if they don't come back," said Heather Hopkins, a senior online market analyst for Hitwise. "Advertisers and retailers need some assurance that visitors will return again and again."

Visitors from Facebook.com are found to be far more devoted towards news media sites than visitors from any other site, the Hitwise survey claimed.

Facebook helps media
Determing where to find faithful readers is getting more and more important for the media sources, with the ad revenue in the newspapers falling by almost 26 percent this year.

Thereby, given the Hitwise feedback on Facebook’s increasing traffic of news readers, the media might shift its focus on the social networking giant.

As the strength of social networking sites like Facebook is growing at a rapid pace, they can surely help sites like Citysearch, eBay, The Huffington Post, Meebo, MSNBC and The New York Times gain assess to millions of users.

Google started Indexing Facebook Pages

It took a while, but Google is now indexing Pages from Facebook, Google said today via a tweet on its official account. Unlike individual profiles, Facebook Pages were designed for organizations, businesses, celebrities, and bands to provide updates. Now, those will be part of Google's real-time search results, which were first announced in December at its real-time search event.

Other social feeds Google said it would index include MySpace, FriendFeed, Jaiku and Identi.ca; most have taken a bit of time. Google began indexing MySpace, for example, just after Valentine's Day.

Google began indexing Twitter before the others, however, and the microblogging service still dominates Google's results today.

Facebook's photo uploader gets an overhaul too

Hot on the heels of a visual face-lift, Facebook on Friday announced that the prototype version of its photo uploader, which was introduced in mid-November of last year, will soon be rolling out to all users.

Unlike the existing version of Facebook's photo uploader, the new uploader requires the installation of a browser plug-in. This inconvenience is rewarded with the option to leave Facebook entirely, while the photos continue to upload in the background. Previously, users would have had to leave that window or page running while the uploader did its magic.

Facebook also said the new uploader supports a few extra photo formats, though it did not specify which ones. The company has, for some time now, had unofficial support for a handful of alternate formats, including raw images. However, on its official spec sheet the company says only .jpg, .gif, .bmp, and .png files will work.

Facebook currently gets 2.5 billion photo uploads per month. To put that in perspective, the company hit the 10 billion mark in October of 2008, a whole three years after first introducing the photo-sharing feature in 2005. In other words, any small change that makes it easier for people to get their photos onto the social network could end up having a big effect on how fast Facebook's photo collection will continue to grow.

If you can't wait for Facebook to activate the uploader on your account, you can do it yourself. Just head over to Facebook's prototype page, and turn it on.

Mozilla yanks infected add-ons, warns users

Mozilla on Friday pulled two programs from its Firefox browser add-on site for containing malware. Sothink Web Video Downloader 4.0 and all versions of Master Filer were found to contain Trojan horse code aimed at Windows users. In a blog post, Mozilla stated that the Master Filer add-on was able to bypass AMO's security tests.

Mozilla user CatThief discovered the threat, it said. And when Mozilla added two more security checks to its vetting process and rescanned its entire catalog, it discovered that version 4 of the Sothink Web Video Downloader also contained a Trojan horse program. Sothink Web Video Downloader contained Win32.LdPinch.gen, and Master Filer contained Win32.Bifrose.32.Bifrose.

Master Filer was removed from Mozilla's Firefox add-on site on January 25, and the Sothink video downloader was removed on Tuesday. CNET Download.com ceased hosting the Sothink add-on on Friday before noon.

Sothink Web Video Download 5.5.90819 had been a mildly popular Firefox add-on at Download.com, receiving 697 downloads in the past week and 63,716 downloads since it was first added to the site in June 2007.

Because the Trojan horse programs are tied to Firefox, Mozilla warns, host computers won't be infected until Firefox started. Uninstalling either add-on is only part of the solution, if the infection has already attacked the host computer. Mozilla recommends that users who suspect that they are infected use one of the following security applications to sweep and clean their computers after uninstalling the threatening add-on:

Ikarus
K7 AntiVirus
McAfee
Norman
VBA32

Infected users should note that only Avast and AVG are free.

5 Reasons Why The iPad Fails To Impress

On January 27th Steve Jobs unveiled Apples latest “it” product, the iPad. Essentially the iPad “fills the gap” in between smartphones and laptops. One question remains to be answered, is there a need for a device to bridge the gap in between the two technologies? We're not sure yet, but there is one thing we know, the iPad has some issues... below are 5 of the most glaring.

1.) The Name

Numerous names were being thrown around in the months/weeks leading up to the release (iTablet, iSlate, iPad) but which name was Apple going to choose? I had grown accustomed to referring to the device as the iTablet, I could even see calling it the iSlate… but iPad never seemed quite right. Why would Apple want to name their new product something that sounds so familiar to the iPod? Some people are objecting to the name referring to it as the “iTampon”.

Talk about foresight, this Mad TV iPad skit aired several years ago... and easily became 10x funnier.

2.) No Multitasking
Are you serious… who thought this was a good idea? How can the iPad even compete with Netbooks if you can’t multitask? This means that if you're writing a document you can’t listen to music, you can’t have TweetDeck open if you want to check your email, you can only do one thing at a time, which has always been a complaint with the iPhone.

3.) No Camera
Why is there no camera on the iPad, front or back? It’s got a microphone… but no camera. Look at the size of the case that surrounds the screen, there is ample space for a camera. The iPad should’ve at least come with a 3-megapixel camera built in. As it stands, this means no iChat/Skype chat for you. Good move Apple, good move.

4.) Huge Ridiculous Adapters
Want to access your camera or plug in something USB… well there’s an adapter for that, actually 2 separate adapters both excessively huge.

5.) Same Touch Keyboard
The iPad needed to re-revolutionize the keypad for touchscreen devices, make it easier to use. So what did we get… just a larger version of what we already had. It’ll be incredibly hard to type on, unless you're lying flat with your knees holding the device up, or you buy the iPad Case (essentially a book cover).

BONUS: No Flash (We just couldn't stop at 5)
Most of us are probably accustomed to Apple devices not being Flash compatible, but if Apple is truly wanting to compete with other Netbooks they need to remedy this. With a larger screen comes more responsibilities, i.e. you can't just leave gigantic holes in the middle of webpages if you claim it to be "the best web experience you've ever had".

The iPad is still in its infancy, so we're sure that it'll get better with time. Only time will tell if Apple's iPad will be a success or an iFlop.

Study: Hacking Passwords Easy As 123456

If you are using "123456" as your password it is past time to stop. Same if you are using the always popular "Password" to protect your account. Those easy-to-hack passwords were the top and fourth most-popular from among 32 million hacked from RockYou.com, a new study finds.

Imperva studied the breached passwords and has published an interesting study that talks about them. While "Consumer Password Worst Practices" isn't about us supposedly savvy business users, as an occasional system administrator I've run into both 123456 and Password on many occasions.

Here are the top passwords Imperva found among those compromised in the attack (they were posted online, without identifying details, for the world to see--and analyze):

1. 123456
2. 12345
3. 123456789
4. Password
5. iloveyou
6. princess
7. rockyou
8. 1234567
9. 12345678
10. abc123

If any of those look too familiar, please stop reading this story and change your password now. All these passwords are easy to crack using simple brute-force automated methods. And with the list now published, they are likely to move to the top of everyone's list of those to try first when attempting to crack an account manually.

"To quantify the issue, the combination of poor passwords and automated attacks means that in just 110 attempts, a hacker will typically gain access to one new account on every second or a mere 17 minutes to break into 1000 accounts," Imperva said in its report.

Among its key findings:

About 30 percent of users chose passwords whose length is equal or below six characters.
Moreover, almost 60% of users chose their passwords from a limited set of alpha-numeric characters.
Nearly 50% of users used names, slang words, dictionary words or trivial passwords (consecutive digits, adjacent keyboard keys, and so on).

If it makes you feel any better, a similar study of hacked Hotmail passwords from 20 years ago found much the same thing.

Imperva provides a list of password best practices, created by NASA to help its users protect their rocket science, they include:

It should contain at least eight characters
It should contain a mix of four different types of characters - upper case letters, lower case letters, numbers, and special characters such as !@#$%^&*,;" If there is only one letter or special character, it should not be either the first or last character in the password.
It should not be a name, a slang word, or any word in the dictionary. It should not include any part of your name or your e-mail address.

Following that advice, of course, means you'll create a password that will be impossible, unless you try a trick credited to security guru Bruce Schneir: Turn a sentence into a password.

For example, "Now I lay me down to sleep" might become nilmDOWN2s, a 10-character password that won't be found in any dictionary.

Can't remember that password? Schneir says it's OK to write it down and put it in your wallet, or better yet keep a hint in your wallet. Just don't also include a list of the sites and services that password works with. Try to use a different password on every service, but if you can't do that, at least develop a set of passwords that you use at different sites.

Someday, we will use authentication schemes, perhaps biometrics, that don't require so much jumping through hoops to protect our data. But, in the meantime, passwords are all most of us have, so they ought to be strong enough to do the job.

Facebook 3 Privacy Mistakes

No organization is exempt from screwing up, but lately that holds especially true for Facebook. While perhaps well intentioned, Facebook has committed a series of blunders with recent changes to its privacy settings in an effort to simultaneously protect users' information and make it accessible to open Web searches. Needless to say, the social networking giant seems to be having trouble doing both well.

1: Everyone Means Everyone
When in doubt, go the transparent route. Following its privacy overhaul Wednesday, Facebook forced users to review their privacy settings with a series of prompts that ostensibly enabled them to have more control over what information they share and with whom. If they so chose, Facebook users could change their privacy settings from the default "everyone" to "friends" or "friends of friends" settings, which only allowed contacts on the user's network to view status updates and other information posted on a user's profile. However Facebook failed to make clear that the "everyone" setting didn't only mean the entirety of the user's Facebook network, it meant the entirety of the Web. The "everyone" setting puts users' Facebook status updates and profile information up for grabs by online search engines such as Google or Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT)'s Bing, as well as some third-party Facebook enhanced apps. Had that been made clearer, it's doubtful that more than 80 percent of users would retain the default "everyone" setting.

2: Another Manual Prompt
In response to a firestorm of complaints regarding privacy setting issues, Facebook improved the Friend List visibility option, making it slightly more challenging for members to view friends' personal and professional contacts, whether or not they're a member of the network. Facebook eliminated the link to a Friend List on user's profiles, while also including an option for members who wish to block everyone from viewing their contact lists, whether they're a member of the network or not. But once again, it's not clear who exactly will have access to Facebook users' Friend List. The information is still publicly available, and can also be accessed by third-party applications -- just not within Facebook itself. Meanwhile, Facebook users will be required to manually and deliberately uncheck the box marked 'show my friends on my profile" if they want to implement these restrictions.

3: What Facebook Isn't Telling You
First and foremost, Facebook has its own best interest at heart -- not yours or your privacy. Facebook's privacy redesign was intended to make the social networking site more competitive with micro-blogging site Twitter, which touts simplicity and ease of use, along with openness and availability to all. Meanwhile, in recent weeks, Microsoft publicly announced that it would be forming deals with both Twitter and Facebook to funnel tweets and other user content onto its search pages. Since then, both Microsoft and Facebook have been rather tight lipped about how exactly Facebook posts and updates were to be incorporated into Bing. In light of Twitter's explosive growth, it's likely that all of Facebook's content, including personal status updates, could be subjected to search engine searches.

Meanwhile, Facebook also said it responded to a firestorm of criticism regarding privacy settings by limiting visibility to users' Friend Lists. However Friend List restrictions, coupled with revamped privacy settings, also give Facebook a foot in the door in the professional networking arena, priming the site to compete toe to toe with LinkedIn, which is geared toward professional networking. By limiting access to Friend Lists, Facebook acknowledges that some users might be hesitant to post something online that might jeopardize their current or future job.

Sal appears to be a man with very idiosyncratic needs, which he has attempted to satiate by marrying his favorite video game character.

Perhaps you think I have finally lost my last marble. However, please examine this footage. Courtesy of the radical realists at BoingBoing, this video shows that Sal married Nene Anegasaki, a character in the Nintendo DS game, Love Plus.

These unique nuptials were apparently broadcast on the Japanese video sharing site, Nico Nouga Nouga, a place where many strange things occur for, no doubt, extremely sound psychological reasons.

I don't wish to so much as broach the topic of marital consummation. However, I can tell you that attending the wedding, which was held, naturally, at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, were the bride's virtual video game girlfriend, a live audience and, yes, a real religious priest.

I cannot find record of where the happy couple might be honeymooning, but I have an indelible fear that it might be in a very small, dark apartment somewhere in Tokyo. I trust they will have a large and healthy family.

E-mails not private anymore - Police can now track your e-mails

Mumbai, Nov. 22 -- The police can now read your e-mails without prior permission from the home department. The Parliament recently cleared an amendment to the Information Technology (IT) Act, allowing the police to intercept or decrypt online information without seeking the home department's nod.

Rising instances of cyber crime have prompted the move aimed at cutting red tape. The amendment empowers the inspector general of police to permit interception or decoding information in cyber space in an emergency. This will help speedy detection of cyber crimes like phishing or sending offensive messages and in tracking terrorists who operate using the Internet.

Advocate I.P. Bagaria said the amendment was necessary. "Every citizen has a right to privacy. However, this cannot be at the cost of the state or country," he said. The secretary in-charge of the state home department should be informed about the interception within three days of tracking.

The secretary - the final sanctioning authority - has to grant permission within seven days. Once the sanction has been obtained, it has to be placed before the Review Committee within two months. Senior advocate Amit Desai said this period should be reduced. "Otherwise there are chances of misuse of these powers."

The police had to earlier take permission from the additional chief secretary, home or, in an emergency, the joint secretary. "Liberalisation of interception is required when the world is dealing with terrorism," said senior police officer-turned-lawyer Y.P. Singh.

Cyber expert Vijay Mukhi said there should be a mechanism to check misuse.

Google Chrome OS coming next week?

The Google Chrome OS, first announced back in July, will be available next week, says a TechCrunch report.

The free, open source operating system should be released in a very early form, as promised, with broader support in 2010.

Said Google at the time: "Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work."

Google has said in the past that they are working with EEE, Acer, Adobe, ASUS, Freescale, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, and Toshiba, mainly on netbook support.

Facebook To Increase Enforcement Of Anti-Scam Rules

Facebook published a long blog post today about their enforcement efforts around app advertising and offer scams. And while they didn’t mention all the negative press that has hit them this week, that’s the reason for the new communication.

Facebook says that deceptive ads are a widespread problem on the Web (which is true), and they say they’ve been fighting these scams for some time (which is also true, albeit a little slowly sometimes). They point to their updated policies on third party ads on the Facebook platform from July – which are aggresively pro-user but have rarely been enforced. They also note that they have disabled two ad networks since then, and are disabling two more now.

In my talks with Facebook earlier this week they took the position that they’ve been aggresively protecting users, and they’re taking the same tone in this blog post. They say that with so many ads and so many apps its impossible to monitor the entire platform effectively. My answer was that it took me about 10 seconds to find really scammy ads on FarmVille, the most popular social game on Facebook with 63+ million monthly users. If they just start with the big guys, a lot of the problem will go away.

In our original post we showed a financial connection between these ads and Facebook. Apps take the money from the ads and then aggressively buy ads on Facebook, effectively giving them a cut. So slow enforcement against even the top apps when they are so blatantly violating the rules is both unacceptable and suspicious.

Facebook says they are building out teams and technologies to address the problem.

We’ve witnessed a remarkable effort this week by industry players to clean up the ecosystem, even while Facebook has been silent on the issue. MySpace, Zynga and RockYou all took steps to eliminate scams.

Which is remarkable when you think about it. Anyone who doesn’t engage in scammy behavior right now is at a monetization disadvantage. There are real similarities between this issue and steroid use in baseball. As long as the MLB didn’t really enforce steroid use among players, it was a competitive necessity to take the drugs, and so many more players took them than otherwise would. What we saw this week was the equivalent of the MLB staying silent while a group of the most popular players admitted to steroid use and promised to stop using it from now on.

If Facebook is serious about stopping app offer scams, it will all be a lot easier in the future for developers to abstain. Hopefully, this is the start of a much cleaner Facebook.

But if they continue with their arguments that Facebook is no dirtier than the rest of the Internet, and resist outside pressure to clean up their community, we could quickly be back where we were just a week ago.

Override Word's automatic text selection - Microsoft Word

When selecting portions of text, Word tries to be helpful by predicting what you want to select. If you click in the middle of a word and then drag to the next word, Word will increase the selection to include all of the first word.

For example, if you click between the two l's in the word magically (below) and then slide into the next word, print, Word automatically extends the selection to consume all of magically, whether you meant to or not.

If you back-drag the selection, Word will undo the automatic selection, but that's a nuisance. To countermand Word's behavior for the current selection, hold down [Shift]+[Ctrl] before making your selection. Then, Word will limit the selection to only those characters you actually drag across.

You might find yourself overriding the automatic selection behavior more often than not. When this happens, consider disabling the feature as follows:

1. From the Tools menu, choose Options.
2. Click the Edit tab.
3. Clear the When Selecting, Automatically Select Entire Word option.
4. Click OK.

Learn how to keep two words together when they happen to fall at the end of the line and Word pushes the last name to the next line.

Unless you've enabled hyphenation, Word looks for a space character to determine when to wrap text to the next line. That won't always be what you want, though. You'll want to keep some words and phrases together, regardless of where they fall in relation to the right margin.

For example, suppose you want to keep a person's first and last name together, but they happen to fall at the end of the line and Word pushes the last name to the next line.

When this happens, you can keep the names together by joining them with a nonbreaking space. Just glue them together with a nonbreaking space, as follows:

1. Enter the first name as you normally would.
2. Instead of entering a normal space character, press [Ctrl]+[Shift]+Spacebar.
3. Enter the last name.

Using a nonbreaking space, you can keep words together.

Being a biker himself, E. Karthick fully understood the problems of ensuring its safety. With so many instances of petrol and bike theft surfacing, thanks to key duplication and short circuiting, he decided to design a solution, That’s when this II Division Tamil Nadu cricket player came up with the digital bike locking system, a registered invention.

How it works

So what’s the science behind it? The system controls the operation of the petrol tap and subsequently the supply to the acceleration. Thus by having ensured the control of these two basic parameters, the bike itself cannot be started without a digital access in the form of a password that’s to be typed in through the display on the keychain. The novelty comes to play in the next function — on the input of a wrong password, an alarm is activated that sends a message to the owner’s mobile using the input GSM technology. So your bike’s safety is now literally in your hands. Apparently, the digital locking system is itself set up inside so there’s no chance of the system itself being tampered with. “The interesting part of the invention is that the same system can be modified to be put to use in three, four or any wheeler, like a train for instance,” he explains.

And he isn’t joking when he says he will start work on that too soon. With his project receiving much appreciation and recognition, Karthik is now on the look out for funds to set up his own company that would manufacture the digital bike locking systems. The work for the same has started on a small scale in the registered name of ‘Silver Fox’. “My products will be available in a few month’s time and I hope to make it available throughout Tamil Nadu,” he says ambitiously. Simultaneously, Karthik is also working on another two-wheeler and home security project. Until then, let’s await the entry of this young electronics entrepreneur who is all set to create an impact in the automobile industry.
